Kenhoo (oligosaccharins 0.5% SL) - Guardian of Plant Immunity and Terminator of Root-Knot Nematode

Oligosaccharins, also referred to as agricultural chitosan oligosaccharide, is a polysaccharide natural product (oligosaccharides from β-1.4 glycosidic bond-linked D-glucosamine) derived from shells of marine organisms, such as shrimp and crab, being a low-toxic fungicide produced via re-degradation of the chitosan, which is made from  degrading chitinous substances or via microbial fermentation.

In terms of agricultural application, oligosaccharins has a good effect on the control of mosaic diseases on fruit trees, vegetables, underground rhizome, tobacco, herbs, grains and cotton crops caused by virus, bacteria and fungi. It is also effective for the control of nematode, which is broadly recognized among users.

Application of Oligosaccharins to Crop Production

Up until December 2018, 77 oligosaccharins products have been published on the China Pesticide Information Network, covering active ingredients between 0.5% and 5%, which are mostly fungicide products.  At this time in China, however, only 2 enterprises having positioned their oligosaccharins products on prevention and cure of root-knot nematode. The earliest company with registration for this purpose was Chengdu Newsun Crop Science, whose Kenhoo (oligosaccharins 0.5% SL) turns out to be China’s first botanical nematicide for the prevention and cure of root-knot nematode.

As a novel biopesticide, what is different from conventional pesticides is how oligosaccharins does not act directly on insect pests, but stimulates plant immunity to induce plants to generate disease-resistant substances, such as phenolic compound, chitinase, glucanase, lignin, phytoalexin and pathogenesis-related proteins so plants will gain systemic acquired resistance (including stress resistance), along with stress resistance, insect resistance and increased yields.

Action Mechanism of Kenhoo: not directly acting on insect pests, but stimulates plant immunity

As a polysaccharide biopesticide, Kenhoo (oligosaccharins 0.5% SL), once applied, will immediately stimulate plant defenses to induce  the generation of chitinase to decompose and absorb the chitosan oligosaccharide inside nematodes and egg shells, which cause nematodes and egg shells to degrade, thus leading to death of nematodes and eggs. Kenhoo is safe to the environment, but its effectiveness is equivalent to chemical pesticides.

For demonstration and promotion purposes, Kenhoo (oligosaccharins 0.5% SL) has been applied for control of root-knot nematode on celery, tomato, cabbage, cucumber, tea trees and kiwi trees. The results have revealed approximately 85% effectiveness in control, which is superior to abamectin, being equivalent to the chemical nematicide on the market. The biological control effects of oligosaccharins have been broadly recognized by agro-technical promotion authorities and growers.

Nematode Control Applications of Kenhoo (oligosaccharins 0.5% SL)

Besides its excellent effect of control, Kenhoo (oligosaccharins 0.5% SL) can be easily degraded by soil microorganisms into water and carbon dioxide, which are easily absorbed into the environment and will leave behind no residues. Its induced plant defense substances are normal plant constituents, which are nonhazardous and pollution free. The product has its double functions of pesticide application and fertilization, being an ideal choice for development of green agriculture.

With the implementation of China’s “pesticide-use and fertilizer-use dual reduction” program, the use of high-toxic nematicides is being increasingly prohibited. At this time, Kenhoo (oligosaccharins 0.5% SL) is expected to take the place of part of high-toxic chemical pesticides for application to crops, which is of great future prospects. In the meantime, Chengdu Newsun Crop Science is continuing its efforts to achieve extended scope in the application of oligosaccharins, such as the control of crop powdery mildew and gray mold, as well as storage and preservation of fresh fruit, thus enhancing the market competitiveness of this product.
