Eurofins Agroscience Services Ecotox. department presents a fascinating time lapse
video showing developing honey bee larvae (Apis mellifera) which have been reared in-vitro and fed with an artificial diet.
The footage was created by EAS Ecotox experts based on around 1000 individual pictures which were taken in thirty minute intervals over a time span of 22 days. It allows the viewer to follow the secret development of honey bees during the larval phase and pupation phase right through to adult emergence.
This rearing method is described in the recently published OECD Guidance Document on Honey Bee Larval Toxicity Tests following Repeated Exposure (Series on Testing & Assessment No. 239). As an important part of the worldwide pollinator risk assessment, this type of study helps to understand the influence of plant protection products on the development of immature honey bees.
Eurofins Agroscience Services contributed to the establishment of the OECD Guidance Document and is offering GLP honey bee larval studies since 2010. Studies can be conducted all year round in Germany, Spain and in the USA. Please contact
