Sumitomo Chemical's Health & Crop Sciences sales up 13% in Q1 FY 2013

Sumitomo Chemical’s Health & Crop Sciences section sales were up by 13.2% to ¥75,999 million for the first quarter ended June 30, 2013, versus the same period of previous year. Operating income increased by 25.1% to ¥8,133 million in this quarter compared with the same period of last year. Health & Crop Sciences segment includes crop protection chemicals, fertilizers, feed additives, household and public hygiene insecticides, and active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates.

In the area of crop protection chemicals, shipments of herbicides and other products rose in overseas markets due to increased production capacity and sales expansion. Market prices of the feed additive methionine declined. The correction of the yen’s appreciation had a positive effect on sales from overseas subsidiaries in yen terms.

As a result, the segment’s sales increased by ¥8,846 million compared with the same period of the previous fiscal year, to ¥75,999 million, and operating income grew by ¥1,634 million, to ¥8,133 million.
