The crop protection market in Brazil closed 2020 at US$ 11.8 billion against US$ 12.7 billion in 2019. The main reason for this decline of 7%, was the Exchange rate with depreciation of the Real and also the anticipation from the Farmers 20/21 & 21/22 due to the strong prices for Soybeans, Corn, Cotton and Sugar.

The Big Four companies represented 57,5% of the market, showing the increase of post patented products in the market and with strong growth of Ouro Fino, one Brazilian company, that now is part of the Top 10 crop protection companies in Brazil.

Another point that calls attention in the market was the strong growth of the Bio pesticide market that grew 34 % compared with 2019 representing already 2,5% of the market. Some projections appoint that bio-pesticides will represent 20% of the market.

According to Spark, the largest market for the biological is the same as the crop protection market; soybeans represented 59% of the sales and sugarcane 27%. Also, according to the study, biological products are divided in importance and indication as follow: Insecticides with 41% participation, nematicides (35%) and fungicides (24%)

The main reason for this grew was:

  • Increased resistance of pests and diseases with an accentuated fall in the performance of chemicals and limited supply of new molecules

  • Indiscriminate destruction of beneficial insects and consequent outbreak of secondary pests

  • Decreased biological activity of the soil with consequent impact on productivity of the crop

  • Consumers around the world demand more sustainable and conscious posture business

  • Support from the Federal Government for the Bio-input sector

  • Need to control pests and diseases with difficult control by agrochemicals. Old Agrochemicals that controlled these pests were banned from the market and were necessary to create new alternatives. Among the examples of these pests with difficult control are Nematodes, White Mold, Rust, whiteflies, Stink bugs, leafhoppers.

Biopesticides are much more aligned with the future of the agricultural sector, with conscious consumption, with a more logical and more technological agro and with the culture of a new agriculture but there are some problems to solve as:

  • Formulations where is necessary to improve the quality and invest in new technologies

  • Shelf life and storage. It is not easy to distributors handle with the short validity period

  • Reliability: As the barrier of entry in this sector is not difficult a lot of companies enter without good quality in their products.

  • Better explanation about conscious management. Bio Pesticides and Crop Protection Products will have to be used conjointly to improve the control and bring us better yields.

In the next weeks, I will share with you some Bio pesticides products in Brazil that I strongly believe in the growth for the next years.

I will start with the technology of Openeen, one private Brazilian company with headquarters in São Paulo that develops and distribute bio fertilizers and bio pesticides with a strong botany base from its forest located in the north of Brazil. The Neem trees are the great protagonist, also known as Nim, Margosa, Lila Índio, Melia, Azadirachta, or Azaradirachta indica. The difference point from other products based in Neen Tree is that Openeen uses more than 300 compounds from different parts of Neem that act on synergy for one more effective control.

Their focus is to innovate and uniting the power of nature with technology cutting-edge to solve agricultural challenges, expanding the productivity in the Integrated Pests Management in an integrated way. With a liquid and very well-established formulation, the organic bio-insecticide has a systemic and Trans laminar action that operates efficiently in the prevention and the management of pests, keeping them below the level of economic damage.

Suitable for conventional and organic production on integrated control of pests and chemical resistance management.

The main advantages of these products are:

  • Selectivity against natural enemies

  • Trans laminar: hits hard-to-reach pests

  • Compatibility with most products, does not affect the operational

  • Regardless of weather conditions

  • Allows aerial application and ultra-low volume

  • Competitive cost-benefit

  • Natural amino acids of rapid absorption

Opennen Plus is the main product and it is a growth regulators that interfere in the ecdise and cause neurological, food, and reproductive dysfunctions in the cheese and suckers classes, helping to maintain the low population of pests and promoting the reduction of the number of applications over time.

It is used always in conjoint with the chemicals; it is a perfect combination of pest management with resistance management.

One Tree Pharmacy is so is known on its continent of origin, for having inset properties, bactericidal, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, repellent, healing, antioxidants, antiseptics, and astringents, what makes Openeen bring for the market in the future new products that will help the farmer to improve the quality for their yields and make a better control on pests and diseases and what is better, in a sustainable way.
