Africa Watch: South Africa, Egypt rank top two for importing Clethodimqrcode

In the last issue of Africa Watch, we analyzed the status of Mesotrione imported in South Africa, with the participation of readers. Importers, distributors and research facilities actively participated in the Survey: Africa's Pesticide Importing Status to shared their views on changes to the African market. Here are some of their viewpoints:


- Products are becoming more target specific, with less spectrum for application. Biologicals are becoming more important.
- Integrated pest management is becoming more important. Integration between suppliers and distributors. Mergers and buyouts at supplier level.
- Chlorpyrifos ethyl and methyl are banned in Egypt for use on all fruits and vegetables crops, except cotton.

-Biologicals are experiencing fast growth in Agriculture. MRL's set by EU & other countries importing produce from South Africa - dictates popularity of products and the product portfolios of especially perishable crops, are changing constantly.

Many readers mentioned that they want to see an analysis on Clethodim, so in this issue, we will analyze the chemical. But we will not only focus on South Africa, we will also look at the import status of Clethodim in the entire African market.


Country/Area Analysis


Based on statistics from the China Pesticide Exporting Analysis, we analyzed the import status of Clethodim in African countries over the last five years from 2015 to 2019, which showed that South Africa is the largest importer of Clethodim in Africa, while Egypt came in second.


Clethodim imports in South Africa and Egypt accounted for 97% of Africa’s total imports, averaging 90% over the past five years.


In 2019, the proportion of South Africa’s and Egypt’s Clethodim imports began to decline, as more and more countries began to import it, including Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and other African countries.

Formulation Analysis


Clethodim 240g/L EC is the most popular type of formulated Clethodim. In 2019, South Africa imported 813,902.05 kilograms of Clethodim 240g/L EC worth $6,160,940.76, accounting for 61.30% of total Clethodim imports, followed by Clethodim 94% TC (29.16%), Clethodim 70% TK (3.06%) and Clethodim 120g/L EC (2.66%).


Egypt imported 86,679.00 kilograms of Clethodim 240g/L EC in 2019 worth $967,904.42, accounting for 45.31% of total Clethodim imports, followed by Clethodim 15%+Haloxyfop-P-methyl 7.5% EC (42.67%), Clethodim 120g/L EC (11.91%) and Clethodim 37% TK (0.11%).


Kenya imported 16,616.00 kilograms of Clethodim 240g/L EC in 2019 worth $115,231.00, accounting for 65.57% of total Clethodim imports, followed by Clethodim 12%+Rimsulfuron 3% OD (31.95%) and Clethodim 120g/L EC (2.48%).

Price Trend Analysis


Clethodim 240g/L EC

The highest price of Clethodim 240g/L EC in last five years occurred in January 2019, but the current price is in a state of decline.

The highest price of Clethodim 94% TC in last five years occurred in March 2018, with the current price being relatively stable.
