Glyphosate suspension proves need to update Brazilian pesticide law, says Sindiveg

The Executive Director of the National Plant Protection Association (Sindiveg), Silvia Fagnani, said that the approval of bill 6,299/2002, which relates to the issuing of pesticide release, was even more necessary after the suspension of glyphosate in Brazil. According to her, it is necessary to conduct an urgent reevaluation over the legislation that regulates the approval of pesticides in Brazil.
“I have no doubt. The ideal situation is we can always identify which is the product with the most international warnings and is suffering some restrictions outside Brazil, so that it can be reevaluated effectively here in the country," explained Fagnani.
According to Fagnani, besides promoting agility in the process of analysis and review of pesticides, approving or banning a pesticide, the National Agency of Health Surveillance (Anvisa) will have more time to devote to other important evaluations.“I believe that all the change of procedure proposed in the legislation, although there is not much change of procedure in the revaluation process, will leave Anvisa with more time to dedicate to what is important,” she said.
In this scenario, Silvia said that it would be necessary for a court decision describing when a pesticide should be banned because everything should be revised and analyzed in a timely manner by competent agencies.“So, I imagine that if they open the reevaluation of one, two or three products at the same time, they will better program this reevaluation and will evaluate it within a reasonable time period, and not need an unnecessary court situation,’’ she concluded.
