Bayer registers first honeybee-low-toxic insecticide Flupyradifurone in China

ICAMA of Chinese Ministry of Agriculture announced a number of new pesticide filed for registration on October 28, 2016. The list includes the Flupyradifurone 96% technical and Flupyradifurone 17% SL of Bayer CropScience, both of which are less toxic. The Flupyradifurone 17% SL is registered for the control of Bemisia tabaci in tomatoes.

Flupyradifurone is a novel butenolide compound, produced by Bayer CropScience, being classified under IRAC(Insecticide Resistance Action Committee) Group 4D of Group 4. Flupyradifurone acts on the central nervous system of the targeted pest, being a nAChR agonist. Flupyradifurone’s effect on the active group of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor is different from that of neonicotinoid compound and hence it causes no cross resistance to neonicotinoid compound. As such, it matches very well with the insect resistance management and integrated pest management.

Flupyradifurone has the capabilities of systemicity, contact toxicity, stomach toxicity and permeation. Flupyradifurone can be used in a large variety of crops for highly selective control of major piercing-sucking mouthparts. Flupyradifurone can be applied in various flexible ways, such as by foliar spraying, soil irrigation and drop irrigation. It can also be used for seed treatment. The acute and chronic toxicity study reveals the low toxicity of Flupyradifurone on honeybees (adult bees and larva bees).

In 2014, Bayer CropScience first launched the Flupyradifurone-based Sivanto Prime in Honduras and Guatemala. On January 15, 2015, Flupyradifurone obtained registration in the US. In the same year, the product Sivanto 200 SL was released to market. In this year, Flupyradifurone was also released to the market in Mexico and Nicaragua. In November 2015, the two Flupyradifurone-based products, namely Sivanto Prime and BYI 02960 480 FS, obtained full registration in Canada.

On December 9, 2015, Flupyradifurone was included in the list of registered active ingredient of EU pesticide registration regulation (1107/2009), which would be valid until December 9, 2025. At present, the product registration has not been granted in EU countries yet. Countries where registration is in the process include Austria, Bulgaria, Czech, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Slovenia. Bayer CropScience is expecting the Flupyradifurone-based Sivanto Prime to be registered in Europe in 2016 and released to the market in 2017.

Bayer CropScience claims that till date there has been not a single insecticide like Flupyradifurone that could prevent and control piercing-sucking mouthparts in fast, high-efficient, low-toxic and environment-friendly manners, particularly with low toxicity in honeybees. For these reasons, the future Flupyradifurone market looks quite promising.
