To combat the decline in organic carbon levels in soil, the Indian government has implemented several measures aimed at enhancing soil health and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Over 24.84 crore Soil Health Cards (SHCs) have been issued to farmers, providing detailed information about soil pH, nutrient levels, and organic carbon content. These cards guide farmers on Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), encouraging the balanced use of chemical fertilizers alongside organic manures and bio-fertilizers.
To increase awareness, around 7 lakh field demonstrations, 93,781 training programs, and 7,425 farmer melas have been organized. Agricultural Technology Management Agencies (ATMA) and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) regularly issue advisories, while 70,002 trained Krishi Sakhis assist farmers in understanding SHCs and sustainable practices.
Additionally, the government is promoting organic farming through the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), which supports small and marginal farmers in creating organic farming clusters. Financial assistance is provided for production, processing, certification, and marketing, aiming to build a sustainable supply chain. These initiatives were outlined by Shri Ramnath Thakur, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, in a written response to the Rajya Sabha.
