FMC recently launched its new product, “Presence,” which is the first microbiological nematicide in the Brazilian market approved for use on seeds. The product acts by connecting multiple mechanisms of action, through the symbiotic action of the bacteria,
Bacillus subtilis and
Bacillus licheniformis, benefiting plant health, promoting root growth, and leading to more successful crops.
In this exclusive interview with AgroPages, Fernando Salles, Regional Marketing Manager of FMC, explained the product’s features, such as its WS-specific formulation for seed treatment, which does not increase the volume of syrup. According to him, Presence has excellent stability, the highest concentration in the market, and is compatible with all chemicals used for seed treatment today.
What are the features of the bionematicide, Presence, in relation to chemicals?
Presence is FMC's new microbiological nematicide that focuses on managing phytonematodes when used in seed treatment. It is a registered product. What we usually see on the market are products labelled as nematicides, but they are often not registered for such use.
This product comprises two species of bacteria, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis. A unique feature of this product is the concentration of these bacteria. More important than percentage is the number of colonies that form per gram of the product. Presence has a concentration of 2x10¹¹, which is very high when compared to other products in the market, being 200 times more concentrated.
What are the mechanisms of action of Presence?
Presence has multiple mechanisms of action, such as acting as a physical barrier. The moment when the seed begins to germination, the two bacteria begin to multiply and colonize the plant’s root system, forming a biofilm that acts as a barrier.
Both bacteria that colonize the rhizosphere work in synergy with the plant, and when they consume the exudates made by the roots, they create a new mechanism of action against nematodes, which are dependent on these root exudates. If you have a lower concentration of these exudates, nematodes will have a harder time finding the root. These bacteria also release an enzyme called chitinase, which kills juvenile nematodes.
What else can be said about the formulation of Presence?
The product is classified as a WS formulation, which is a syrup preparation powder that can be added to an admixture with other chemicals without any incompatibility. It does not increase the syrup volume during seed treatment. Its shelf time is 24 months, a very significant amount of time. It is also worth noting that Presence is registered for use on the nematodes species, "Meloidogyne incognita" and "Pratylenchus brachyurus." Because it is a biological tool, it is regulated more for use on its targets rather than on crops, and it can be used on any type of crop suffering from these species, especially soybean, cotton maize and beans.
