9 pesticide technical products including prothioconazole to be granted registration for the first time in China

Recently, China's ICAMA published the latest list of pesticides intended for registration, which included nine pesticide technical products to be registered for the first time. The details are as follows:

Prothioconazole

Prothioconazole is a new triazolthione fungicide developed by Bayer. The product is not only systemic, but is excellent for protecting and curing, with high fungicidal activity. It has also got the apparent function of increasing the crop yield. Compared with the triazole fungicide, prothioconazole has a broader spectrum of fungicidal activity.

Prothioconazole was launched in the market in 2004, which now covers more than 60 countries. The growth of prothioconazole has been steady in the first 10 years since its market release (except 2010), having reached a historical peak in 2014 when its global sales reached US$855 million. Its compound annual growth rate reached as high as 39.8% from 2004 to 2014.

Among the 60-odd countries where prothioconazole was launched, Brazil is the largest market of prothioconazole.

Afidopyropen

BASF’s afidopyropen was discovered from biological fermentation, which is a propene compound, being a brand new insecticide for the control of piercing-sucking mouthparts. The product offers the features of fast action, high efficiency and broad spectrum. Its ingredient is included by the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) as the first one of the Group 9D, as well as the sole insecticidal ingredient, which has no cross-resistance to the existing insect pest management system.

Afidopyropen interferes with the chordotonal organ of the insect, which causes the insect to lose its sense of reaction to gravity, balance, sound, position and movement, resulting in the epicophosis and a loss of direction, further leading to a loss of food and water, and thus causing the insect to die of hunger.

Afidopyropen effectively reduces viral and bacterial diseases transmitted by the insect vector, being very effective in the control of aphid and whitefly with a long-lasting effect. It is effective through different stages of the insect (ineffective to ovum). It has an outstanding foliar infiltration capacity, and is resistant to rain wash via its unique formulation.

Valifenalate

The product was initially registered in 2007, having been approved in the EU in 2014 for application on grapes and potatoes for the control of oomycete diseases, particularly downy mildew.

In 2011, Isagro assigned property ownership to ISEM, which is a joint venture between
Isagro and Chemtura. In 2013, ISEM assigned the same to Belchim, which later granted exclusive rights to FMC for the registration, production and marketing in Latin America, North America and some other regions.

Penthiopyrad

Penthiopyrad is a pyrazole amide fungicide discovered by Mitsui Chemicals and developed jointly by Mitsui Chemicals and DuPont, being the 10th SDHI product following carboxin.

Penthiopyrad is not only highly active on rust disease and stalk break, but is also quite effective in controlling gray mold, powdery mildew and apple scab. Before the market release of penthiopyrad, DuPont entered into an agreement with Mitsui Chemicals for joint market exploration. Later on, Syngenta was licensed by DuPont. Nippon Soda has also been very positive toward the development of penthiopyrad.

The sales of penthiopyrad rank eighth among the SDHI fungicides, but its speed of growth has been very high in recent years. Its compound annual growth rate reached as high as 58.5% from 2009 to 2014, ranking first among the SDHI products.

Spirodiclofen diester

Spirodiclofen diester is a non-systemic miticide, which controls ovum, young mite and the female adult mite via contact toxicity and stomach toxicity. The action mechanism of the product lies in its inhibition of the pest mite’s internal fat synthesis and blocking of energy metabolism. It causes no substantial cross resistance to the conventional miticide.

Spirodiclofen diester is effective in controlling panonychus, tetranychus, eotetranychus and eriophyes, being applicable on citrus, grape, eggplant and chili. Spirodiclofen diester not only has the advantage of a long-lasting effect of spirodiclofen, but also offers higher activity than spirodiclofen.

Benzovindiflupyr

Benzovindiflupyr is a pyrazole amide fungicide developed by Syngenta, which is an SDHI product, being mainly applied to grain crops for the satisfactory control of main diseases on wheat, corn and special crops. The product is effective in controlling wheat leaf blotch, wheat take-all, wheat foot rot, particularly the wheat powdery mildew, corn leaf spot and gray mold, as well as being particularly effective in controlling Asian soybean rust. The product has no cross resistance to the strobilurin fungicide and triazole fungicide, and can be mixed with a variety of fungicides for application.

Benzovindiflupyr is a broad spectrum fungicide, being an SDHI product, which acts on the protein complex II of the pathogenic mitochondrial respiratory electron-transport chain, thus impacting the pathogenic respiratory electron-transport chain to block its energy metabolism and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, leading to its death, and hence preventing and controlling pest damage.

Benalaxyl-M

Compared with Benalaxyl,Benalaxyl-M removes the inactive S forebody. Its activity is thus enhanced and the usage is reduced by half. This can speed up degradation and metabolism in the environment, as well as ensure environmental safety, which proves the product will have a promising future.

Benalaxyl-M has a high selectivity and activity on oomycote fungi. It can be used for the control of late blight on solanaceous vegetables such as potatoes and tomatoes, downy mildew on hop, grapes, lettuce, onions, soy and tobacco, as well as phytophthora-caused strawberry disease, ornamental plant disease and pythium-caused lawn root rot. Besides its use as a foliage treatment agent, Benalaxyl-M can be mixed with other fungicides to be developed into seed-dressing agent.

Fluensulfone

Fluensulfone is the sole chemical nematicide developed over the last 20 years. The product has a contact activity, which enables growers to get rid of the fumigant nematicide and avoid the consequences of the use of the fumigant nematicide. Fluensulfone has low toxicity, a lower environmental risk and is easy to use; these features will provide the nematicide industry with great future prospects. So far, the product has been registered in the United States for the control of nematodes on tomatoes, chilies, okra, eggplants, cucumbers, watermelons and cantaloupes.

 Pyroxasulfone

Developed by Kumiai Chemical, pyroxasulfone is a pre-emergence soil-finishing agent, which is applicable to most of the crop fields. Its action mechanism is similar to acetochlor and related herbicides, but its application covers many more crop species than acetochlor and metolachlor do, and the biological activity is also much higher.

Pyroxasulfone is a broad spectrum herbicide variety with residue activity, which effectively prevents and controls a large variety of grassy weeds and broadleaf weeds.

In order to promote the product in the market, Kumiai Chemical has entered into agreements with FMC, Valent and Bayer. In 2016, the global sales of pyroxasulfone were $135 million. Its compound annual growth rate from 2011 to 2016 reached as high as 166.7%.
