By Leonardo Gottems, reporter for AgroPages

Over 20 companies in Argentina that nearly represent the largest chunk of the Argentinean agrochemical market, gathered at the Campo Limpio Foundation to advance the implementation of a management system for used empty packages.

Within the framework of the 25th AAPRESID Annual Congress, more than 20 companies that represent almost the majority of agrochemicals market interested in packaging recovery met with the Campo Limpio Foundation to advance in the implementation of a management system Containers.

Invited by the Chamber of Agricultural Health and Fertilizers (Casafe) and the Argentinean Industry Chamber of Fertilizers and Agrochemicals (CIAFA), the companies are part of the Foundation that will work actively on these goals.

Among the special guests were officials of the Ministry of Agriculture to whom they presented the general alignments of the regulatory decree, which the industry is awaiting to begin the management system at the national level. These included Angela Gracia, coordinator of Environmental Management at the Ministry of Agriculture and Ignacio Garciarena, national director of Agriculture.

Ciafa President, Marcos Prena, highlighted that “For the Campo Limpio Foundation, it is important for Argentina to have a management system that allows all the actors of the productive chain to articulate efforts to provide sustainability to the final destination of the packages.”

In the same line, Gustavo Portis, president of Casafe, celebrated the possibility of working in combination with CIAFA and looking into the future, giving priority to environmental issues and easing a management system for a unique package for all of members of the chain.

Among the suggested expectation for a better functionality and minimum costs, the Campo Limpio Foundation considers it fundamental to contemplate the regulatory decree of the following principles:

- To be a simple and easy enough to be implemented by the farmer. As an example, it should not take more miles to return the empty package than it does to buy it.

- Penalty for those who do not follow the law

- The necessity to incorporate the practice of triple wash or pressure wash in all of the hard plastic packages before taking to the closest storage center, key for using the resources in a more efficient way.

- Contemplate the necessary times for this system in a progressive way. As Transitory Storage Centers are built, farmers will start to comply with regulations.

- The active participation of all that the chain should be an extended and shared responsibility.

The Campo Limpio Foundation was founded in 2016 with the goal to manage the reception system and transform the empty packages of phytosanitary products contemplated in Law 27,279 with minimum budgets for environmental protection. The founders are Dow, Rizobacter and Rotam, and later several other companies in the sector joined to conform the institution, which will execute the recovery of packages, the construction of storage centers and assistance for farmers in this issue.
