Transgenic corn planted in Uruguay has grown 90% of the total planted during this harvest, which accounts for the maximum amount allowed in the country.  Authorities established that 10% of the sown corn has to be conventional.

The area of this transgenic crop has registered its second consecutive increase during this harvest time; in the previous one there was a 85% rise, informed the manager of the Uruguayan Seed Chamber (CUS), Daniel Bayce.

Even though two new events of genetically modified corn were approved last September (resistant to lizards, glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium), they were hardly used in this harvest due to time issues. They will be definitely used in the next one, held Bayce.

Currently, three varieties, resistant to glyphosate and lizards, are used. 150,000 hectares were planted in this campaign, out of which only 500 used triple events, informed the manager of CUS.
