Deutsche Welle, a German broadcaster, points out that Brazil is one of the countries that uses less (6th place) technology per ton of produced food.

When considering investment in dollars per ton of produced food, Japan is the world’s leader in the use of pesticides, according to a study by the German consulting group Kleffmann, commissioned by the Brazilian Agribusiness Association (ABAG). Brazil ranked 6th in the survey conducted in 2009.

According to ANVISA, responsible for analyzing the use of pesticides and grant registration in Brazil, along with the Departament of Agriculture and IBAMA, the levels of pesticide residues in foods consumed in Brazil are not exactly high. Despite this fact, to the entity the levels of irregularities found are high.

The Analysis Program of Pesticide Residues in Food pointed out the use of unauthorized substances in food cultures as the main irregularity observed. The ineffective control of the pesticides levels of pesticides in retail is a major contributor to this situation, combined with other factors, according to the entity, such as the low level of awareness of some producers.

1. Japan
In 1stplace appears Japan with US$ 97.73 invested for each ton of produced food. The Pesticide Science Society of Japan has worked to educate the public about the use of pesticides and waste into crops. Many symposia about the safety of pesticides to humans and the environment were conducted in various locations in Japan to educate consumers and farmers. In the production system in Japan dominates agriculture of many different products in small areas.

2. France
France is the leading European consumer and ranks 2ndamong the countries that consume more pesticides. The country invests US$ 22.29 per ton. Although the study by Klefflemann has considered all countries members of European Union as a specific group, France stood out. The Department of Agriculture of the country is trying to develop regulations for mixing pesticides.

3. European Union (EU)
Third in the list is European Union, with an investment of US$ 20.65 for each ton produced. The research considered all members of the group. Worldwide sales of pesticides by continent show that in Europe consumption increased over 20% between the years of 1997 and 2009. If we consider consumption to the number of hectares (not including permanent pasture), the European ranking is as follows: Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium and France.

4. Argentina
With an investment of US$ 12.44 per ton, Argentina is 4thin the list. The country is quoted by the great competitiveness in food production, and it is one of countries with the biggest production and exportsof these products. According to the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP), in agriculture Argentina stands out in five major crops: soybean, sunflower, corn, wheat and beans. In agribusiness, different forms of production coexist, according to the UNDP.

5. USA
The United States invests US$ 9.42 for each ton of produced food. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2001 it was used in the USA 4.5 pounds of pesticides per person - about 675 million pounds of pesticides used as active ingredient. The United States is one of the countries that have established monitoring programs for pesticide residues.
