In order to maintain the quality of apples and to be able to use plant protection means more than once, German researchers are testing new methods in order to prevent the very common apple disease apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), as per the German website Gabot.de. "The researchers are testing amongst other things, what results would be achieved if a stronger means of protection in line with the tree resistance and a better decomposition."

The cause of apple scab - the fungus inaequalis - overwinters in fallen leaves and attacks the apple trees in spring, when circumstances are better again. In order to hasten the decomposition of the fallen leaves researchers are trying to make the leaves more appetizing to earthworms and other natural organisms. Another method which assists in preventing apple scab is a leaf suction apparatus, which removes the leaves for composting. In order to improve the prognosis for possible damage by scab researchers at the moment are working on the development of a rain sensor as well. Strong rains and wet leaves promote the spreading of the fungus.

The methods are part of a national plan of action for durable use of plant protection means (NAP). The idea of NAP is to limit the use of chemical preparations as far as possible, to promote innovation in the area of plant protection and to develop integrated plant protection further.
