Dow AgroSciences has received US approval for its new combination herbicide, GoldSky (pyroxsulam 12.0 g/litre + florasulam 2.0 g/litre + fluroxypyr 115.7 g/litre), for the control of grass and broadleaf weeds in spring wheat. The company plans to make a limited introduction this autumn, with a full-scale launch in 2009.
GoldSky is the only spring wheat herbicide that combines action against grass and broadleaf weeds for “cross-spectrum” control, says Jim Parker, senior marketing specialist for Dow AgroSciences. Cross-spectrum products account for about 21% of the cereal herbicide market at present, but Dow expects this proportion to reach 38% by 2015. GoldSky is recommended for post-emergence use at 1 pint/acre (1.2 litres/ha). It controls a wide range of broadleaf weeds, including kochia (Kochia scoparia), wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis), pigweeds (Amaranthus spp)and lambsquarters (Chenopodium album). Among the grasses controlled are yellow foxtails (Pennisetum glaucum) and wild oats (Avena fatua).
Pyroxsulam received its first approval in Chile in 2007. It has also been registered in Argentina and Australia and was introduced, as Simplicity, in Canada this year. European registrations are expected next year, with approvals in 30 countries likely by 2010.
