Citing a regulatory filing, Thompson Financial’s Private Equity Hub reported that Athenix – a biotech company with expertise in microbial screening and genomics, which is involved in the development of genetic control technologies of agricultural pests and industrial products such as biofuels, has raised a new US $10 million round from investors.
Athenix, founded in 2001, has signed collaboration deals with Sygenta, Mertec, and Eden Enterprises, as well as a three-year research collaboration with Monsanto in June 2007. Key products include cotton, soybeans, and corn with enhanced traits such as tolerance to important herbicides and resistances to pests such as nematodes and insects. Corn plants featuring a new class of genes discovered by Athenix have shown that they can withstand at least eight times the standard field rate of glyphosate recommended for currently available glyphosate-tolerant corn.
