Strong growth for German agchem market

German agrochemical sales increased by 10.9% in 2007 over the previous year to reach €1,233 million ($1,932.8 million at current rates). Exports at €2,639 million ($4,136.8 million), on the other hand, went down by 0.7%. Total sales of IVA members (including domestic and export sales) increased by 2.7% to €3,872 million ($6,069.7 million).

Herbicide sales in Germany increased by 7.3% to €557 million ($873.1 million). The IVA attributes strong weed pressure in the spring and higher prices as the reasons for the increase.
Fungicide sales declined by 2.7% to €436 million ($683.5 million). This was due to a depressed start to the season after a drought in the spring led to the cancellation of seed treatment orders. Rainfall in May, leading to increased humidity, saw a spurt in late blight (Phytophthora infestans) infestation in potato. This led to an increase in fungicide applications by over 50%. In volume terms, fungicide sales increased by 15.3%.
Insecticides, the smallest segment of the product portfolio, saw the largest year-on-year increase. Their sales reached €159 million ($249.2 million), up 85% over the previous year. The jump in sales was attributed to pesticide resistance, which led farmers to buy new and higher value products.
Pesticides categorised as “other”, comprising mainly molluscicides and rodenticides, grew by 37% to €81 million ($127 million). A persistently wet summer leading to slug infestations, and a mild winter resulting in a spurt in rat populations, were given as the reasons for the increase.

Exports decreased by 0.7% in value terms and 3.4% in volume terms. Western Europe was the main export destination, although the greatest increase in exports was to Central and South America. The largest decline was in North America (US and Canada), where exports decreased by 27%.

The area under small-grain cereals in Germany decreased by 1.6% in 2007. Maize, rapeseed and sugarbeet, on the other hand, registered increases.
