Syngenta has launched the selective herbicide, ELUMIS, for weed management in post-emergence corn crops. Introduced during the IV Argentine Weed Congress 2023, which was exclusively covered by AgroPages, ELUMIS combines the actions of two active ingredients for controlling broadleaf weeds and grasses.

According to the manufacturer, this selective herbicide has a special formulation containing Mesotrione and Nicosulfuron, which "offers greater control over weeds that have proliferated at high rates."

Among the targets indicated for ELUMIS application is Amaranthus spp, which currently affects 87% of Argentina's agricultural area, as well as Eleusine indica and Sorghum halepense, which already cover 40% of the country’s total cultivated area.

Additionally, Syngenta recommends the combined use of ELUMIS with GESAPRIM (Atrazine) to "maximize control and help reduce resistance generation."

Alejandro Piñeiro.jpegAlejandro Piñeiro, South Latin America Herbicide Manager at Syngenta, told AgroPages that "in the face of drought, weeds are living beings and act differently."

"There are different layers that survive and generate a greater number of viable seeds for the following year," he said during the congress held by the Argentine Association of Weed Science (ASACIM). The seed bank that did not emerge in the last campaign that generates concern for the new cycle, he added.

"Therefore, we at Syngenta have the technical service team that accompanies producers while assessing different situations, because there are different strategies lot by lot," Piñeiro said, noting that the Argentine reality regarding weeds is sometimes comparable to what can be observed in a country like the US.

"They have very similar crops to those in Argentina, but in terms of complexity of resistance, we are always seen as a special focus of attention, to see what Argentina is doing in terms of technology," he further added.

″We also learn lessons from the US about the complexity and resistance they face, so we do not make the same mistakes and try to take the right step forward in weed management,″ he explained.

"While locally, in Argentina, we are witnessing greater complexity in terms of species, in the US there are other issues, with one of the main concerns this year and for the coming years being grasses. They are becoming much more relevant compared to previous years, which was only pigweed and black branch," Piñeiro stated.

"We have a very quick response capacity to solve problems that producers are facing in the short-term. In addition, we have a very broad portfolio in terms of herbicide tools. We analyze what problems exist today and what will appear in a few years because, on my part, I have also seen these types of trends," he said in conclusion.
