Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has issued a Special Local Needs (SLN) registration to Belchim Crop Protection enabling North Dakota sugarbeet growers in select counties to manage certain difficult-to-control weeds.

Belchim and an NDSU Extension sugarbeet agronomist requested an SLN registration for Spin-Aid to provide sugarbeet growers with a post-emergence option to control kochia and lambsquarters.

″In many areas, kochia has demonstrated resistance and is very difficult to control,″ Goehring said. ″In crops such as sugarbeets, growers rely on soil-applied herbicides that require rainfall or tillage to be effective. This SLN gives these growers an alternative product when early treatments are unsuccessful.″

This SLN is limited to Pembina, Walsh, Grand Forks, Trail, Cass and Richland counties.

Users must comply with all restrictions, precautions and directions found on the container label and the SLN labeling. A copy of the labeling must be in the user’s possession at the time of application.

This SLN registration is effective immediately and expires December 31, 2027.

Section 24(c) of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act gives states the authority to register additional uses for federally registered pesticide products, or new products to meet special local needs.
