Uruguay wheat area to almost double

Uruguay is set for a spectacular rise in wheat planting this year. The Uruguayan crop protection association, the Urupov, expects an 80% rise in the area to 480,000 ha. Some 390,000 ha will be planted with certified seed and another 90,000 ha with farmer-saved seed, according to the newswire, Infocampo. The large rise in wheat prices is motivating farmers to switch to the crop. Dry conditions in Argentina have led to predictions of a 20% fall in its planting area. This could allow Uruguay to export up to 1 million tonnes for the first time in its history.
