Australia’s pesticide law under scanner

The use of pesticides in Australian agriculture has become a moot point after a member of environmental groups condemned the use saying that the practice carries health hazards. It has come to light that the use of pesticides in agriculture was banned by European countries. Therefore, its continuous use in Australia has raised eyebrows.

Juliette King, from the World Wildlife Fund is of the opinion that Australia should follow Europe as Europe holds gold medal for pesticide regulation. However, Dr. Simon Cubit, of the APVMA, while denying the proposal of Juliette King said, “Australian regulations are amongst the strongest in the world, and it's misleading to claim Europe has a better system”.

The health, consumer and environmental organizations seem like echoing Juliet King as they are demanding repairing the Australia's pesticides laws. According to them, the current pesticide laws of Australia have not been updated for long which has put it under scrutiny.

It has been revealed that the pesticides which are being used by Australia caries 17 such pesticides which are suspected of carrying radiation and 48 are capable of causing hormonal imbalance in human and animals which could cause problems during pregnancy and other developmental disorders in infants.
