The mosquito is the most common vector of diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever and its controlling is critical for the management of those infectious diseases.
Mosquito eggs hatch only in water and the larva live in water and breathe air through spiracles on the water’s surface.
The use of conventional insecticides for controlling the spread of mosquitoes causes huge pollution and may lead to resistance. Therefore, this pest management has been moving towards high efficiency, low toxicity and non-pollutant remedies.
Spinosad is a novel biopesticide that is free of cross-resistance and is highly effective while having low toxicity and being environmental-friendly, with no harm being caused to natural enemies. However, as it is unstable in water and its photolysis is fast (photolysis half-life is shorter than one day in water), it is not possible to apply in water to control mosquito larva.
Beijing Multigrass Formulation Co., Ltd, after long-term research and trials, has solved the obstacle by developing the extended release Spinosad tablet which controls mosquito larva in water. This technology has been granted a Chinese invention patent (patent no. ZL202010880795.5). The Spinosad DT has bi-function as quick dissolving and extended release, thus being both quick-acting and long-acting against mosquito larva in the water. Its rapid release layer allows for quick dissolution, with a clear solution spreading active ingredient 22.5 mg Spinosad, which quickly paralyzes mosquito larva to death. The extended release layer will continuously release 90 mg Spinosad, which kills mosquito larva in water, block eggs hatching and last for more than 70 days.
The product is widely used in community drainage systems, parks, ornamental bonsai, urban sewage, drainage networks, kitchens, bathroom drainages, reservoirs, rivers, lakes etc.
In the past year, Beijing Multigrass had been optimizing Spinosad formulations, having launched SC and granule for crop protection; later Spinosad 0.5% powder for pest control on grain storage; Spinosad 0.025% CB for fruit fly control and Spinosad 7.5% DT for mosquito larva control in the water. The successful development of the extended release tablet not only enriches the company’s Spinosad portfolio, but also provides effective tools for mosquito management in public facilities, having contributed significantly to the reduction of mosquito damage and the spread of the pathogens.
