Brazil’s pesticide residue analysis in foods programme, the Para, is to include eight more crops from this year, the national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, says. The new crops are: rice, peppers, onions, grapevines, pineapples, beans, mangoes and cabbages. There will be another two laboratories available to carry out the analyses, it adds. The basket of foodstuffs is determined by their importance in the basic Brazilian diet, the use of pesticides and the distribution of the crops throughout the country. The Para collects samples at points of sale across Brazil, from where they are distributed across the laboratory network. The programme covers 16 of Brazil’s 27 states and the authorities expect it to be present in every state by next year.
