By the end of 2020, the Crop Protection market in Brazil will consist of around 75% of “off-patent” products, in terms of revenue in US dollars, according to a study released exclusively to AgroPages by Kynetec, one of the leading specialists in global market research in animal health and agriculture.

Ricardo Antolini.jpgAccording to the Kynetec study, the number of new active ingredients launched each year is increasing, although it is still far from the peak of the 1990s. “Many of the new molecules originate in Japan, which is the industry's 'Silicon Valley' crop protection”, points out Leonardo Antolini, Subscription Services Director of Kynetec.

According to the survey, the focus is now more on row crops, fungicides, and insecticides, but with the absence of new modes of action. In addition, there are two dominant launch strategies in the market: The first is the launch of new assets, mainly by the “top 4” agrochemical companies present in Brazil. The second is the launch of new “ready mix” products with off-patent assets by challenging companies.

“For the industry, the challenge is to create and sustain value in a mature and increasingly commoditized market: investing in brand, team training, aggregate services, digital and omnichannel platforms are essential to compete effectively. It is time to change the focus of the product and target the customer, their cultivation systems and think about how to add to their value chain, not just create a new active ingredient,” Antolini said in conclusion.
