Fierce? Herbicide Research Showing Longest Residual Broadleaf and Grass Control

As residual herbicides top researcher recommendations for resistance management programs this season, new trial results show a soon-to-be-registered product from Valent U.S.A. Corporation demonstrated longest lasting control against a variety of tough weeds.

In a series of crop destruct research field trials across 23 states in the 2010 season, growers, retailers and researchers have reported that Fierce™ Herbicide had as much as eight weeks of residual control of key weeds and grasses including velvetleaf, Palmer amaranth, water-hemp, common ragweed, common lamb squarters, morning-glory, Pennsylvania smartweed and giant foxtail.

Fierce, a pre-emergence herbicide from Valent, has an anticipated EPA registration of fall 2011. Additional results from the trials included strong results in crop safety, broadleaf control and grass control:

•98 percent of respondents cited “Good” to “Excellent” crop safety
•96 percent of respondents cited “Good” to “Excellent” control of broadleaves
•93 percent of respondents cited “Good” to “Excellent” control of grasses

“Over years of research, Fierce has provided the longest residual control in university testing; this was evident in our 2010 research trial program as well,” said John Pawlak, Valent product development manager. “These results confirmed that Fierce is what corn and soybean growers have been needing, and what weed scientists are consistently recommending: a herbicide with excellent residual control that will keep fighting tough weeds and grasses well into the season.”

The new herbicide contains Valor® Herbicide, the most used product for broadleaf control in soybeans, and a new active ingredient, pyroxasulfone. Fierce can be applied up to three days after planting soybeans or up to seven days before planting no-till or minimum-till corn.
