The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) of Australia has received a licence application (DIR 169) from The University of Queensland to conduct a trial of genetically modified (GM) microalgae (Nannochloropsis oceanica) with increased production of fatty acids.

The trial is proposed to take place for a total period of up to one year, between 2019 and 2022. It would occur at one pilot plant site, with microalgae cultivated in up to six tanks (600 litre cultivation volume each). The trial site is located in the Brisbane City local government area in Queensland. It would be subject to control measures that restrict the spread and persistence of the GM microalgae and their introduced genetic material. The GM microalgae would not be used for human food or animal feed.

The OGTR is preparing a Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan for the application. This is expected to be released for public comment and advice from experts, agencies and authorities in late October 2019. There will be at least 30 days for submission of comments.
