On 19th April, a press conference was held in Shouguang, Shandong Province,  jointly held by Sino-Agri Leading BioSciences and Mitsui Chemicals Agro for release of the new penthiopyrad product Aifeite, which is a new choice for fruit and vegetable growers.

According to company information, the new product, Aifeite, contains the active ingredient penthiopyrad, a kind of SDHI fungicide. Among the off-patent product varieties from 2015 – 2020, penthiopyrad is the sole SDHI fungicide. In recent years, the penthiopyrad market has been growing rapidly. Its compound annual growth rate from 2009 – 2014 was as high as 58.5%, which ranked first among similar products.

It is understood that there are two registered products in China containing the active ingredient penthiopyrad, includingpenthiopyrad 99% TC and penthiopyrad 20% SC, which are both granted to Mitsui Chemicals Agro on the 30th January 2019. Among the two products, penthiopyrad 20% SC is registered for spraying application for control of grape gray mold and cucumber powdery mildew.

Aifeite has the following distinctive features in vegetable and fruit applications:

1. New compound. It is the first time approval of registration with 6-year registration data protection; Aifeite is of a unique thiophene ring structure, effective in control of powdery mildew, grey mold and stalk break.

2. New fungicidal mechanism. Aifeite acts on the mitochondrial electron transport chain complex, impedes the respiratory energy metabolism of pathogenic bacteria and inhibits the propagation of pathogenic bacteria. Aifeite can quickly inhibit spore production, germination and growth of pathogenic bacteria.

3. New advanced process. Aifeite uses the high-purity technical material of Mitsui Chemicals with superior formula and is compatible with mixtures, as it is reliable and safe.

At present, the penthiopyrad compound and mixtures have been registered in over 30 countries for application to a variety of crops,  mostly vegetables and fruit trees. There is a forecast that the sales of SDHI fungicide will reach $2.5 billion by 2022, of which penthiopyrad is expected to show up as a popular and  promising product in the years ahead.
