Major explosion accident occurred at a chemical plant in Jiangsu, China

At about 14:48 pm on March 21, an explosion occurred in Jiangsu Tianjiayi Chemical Co., Ltd., located in Chenjiagang Town, Xiangshui County, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province. The explosion caused major deaths and injuries. The accident has caused great attention from the central government and rescue operations are being carried out.
Jiangsu Tianjiayi Chemical Co., Ltd. was established in April 2007 with a registered capital of 90 million yuan. The company is located in Xiangshui Provincial Chemical Industrial Park, Xiangshui City, Jiangsu Province - Xiangshui Ecological Chemical Industry Park (Chenjiagang Town, Xiangshui County). Its shareholders are Jiangsu Nijiagang Group Co., Ltd. and Lianyungang Bochang Trading Co., Ltd., of which Jiangsu Nijiagang Group Co., Ltd. holds 70% and Lianyungang Bochang Trading Co., Ltd. holds 30%.
Tianjiayi Chemical covers an area of about 14.7 hectors and has 195 employees. The company's business covers m-hydroxybenzoic acid, anisole, benzene, 2-Chloro-2-methylpropane, KSS, m-phenylenediamine, o-phenylenediamine, p-phenylenediamine, 1000t/a trihydroxymethyl aminomethane, 500t/a 2,4,6-Trimethylaniline etc.
The Xiangshui Ecological and Chemical Industry Park in Jiangsu Province was established in June 2002 with a total planned area of 20 square kilometers, located 1 kilometer west of Chenjiagang Town. In the rectification process of the North Jiangsu Chemical Industry Park last year, all chemical companies in Jiangsu Xiangshui Industrial Park were completely shut down.
Xiangshui County is near Guanhe River. Three chemical parks has established around Guanhekou since 2005, one in Chenjiagang, Xiangshui County, one in Guangou Port, Guannan County, and one in Yanwei Port, Guanyun County. The three chemical parks gathered mostly high-pollution chemical companies that have been relocated from southern Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The products include dyes, pesticides, medicines and intermediates.
The explosion is expected to have a major impact on the chemical production of the surrounding parks.
In 2019, although some agrochemical manufactures have resumed production, the pressure of China's chemical safety and environmental protection has not yet eased. The trends of product price and capacity are still worthy of attention.
