First Chinese company granted pyraclostrobin registration for use in paddy rice

Shandong Qingdao Audis Bio.tech, a subsidiary of Hailir Group, was on November 6 granted registration of pyraclostrobin 9% CS for application to control of rice sheath blight, making it the first Chinese company that has been granted registration of pyraclostrobin for use in paddy rice.

Pyraclostrobin is highly toxic to aquatic organism and extremely toxic to rainbow trout and Daphnia Magna. A European Union (EU) assessment report has emphasized that EU member states must pay special attention to the protection of aquatic organisms especially fish, which have an adverse impact on the popularization and application of pyraclostrobin to paddy rice.

In the past times, BASF’s pyraclostrobin 9% CS was the only product granted registration in China for control of rice blast, which resolved the difficult issue of toxicity. Since the last three years, after pyraclostrobin became a patent in 2015, there have been 550 registrations. However, this is the first time that it has been registered for use on paddy rice.

Sheath blight is said to be the most damaging disease for paddy rice in China, which affects nearly 17 million hectares annually on average. Rice blast has become a more serious threat in the past many years and affects 4 million to 5 million hectares annually.

Pyraclostrobin is known to be active on almost all fungal diseases such as wheat powdery mildew, leaf blight, red spot disease, net blotch, scab, rice sheath blight, sheath blight, downy mildew and epidemic diseases. Besides its direct action on pathogenic bacteria, pyraclostrobin can improve a crop’s fast absorption of nitrogen during its fast-growth period and can delay aging of crops, and thus increase crop yield and quality.
