Sri Lanka to revive glufosinate ammonium-based herbicides

The Sri Lanka government has decided to revive glufosinate ammonium-based herbicides for general weed control in all crop sectors, stated by Dr. J.A. Sumith, the Registrar of Pesticides of Sri Lanka Department of Agriculture in a letter which was written to Chairman of CropLife Sri Lanka. The decision was made at the 93'd Pesticide Technical & Advisory Committee held on August 31, 2018.

The Committee viewed that continuous dependence on single/narrow spectrum of herbicides for total weeds management in the country would be counterproductive on the aspects of development of weed resistance. The above decision has been further strengthened by the Cabinet Memorandum No. PSlCPl20l20l8, which highlighted aspects of finding solutions for alternative weed control strategies for glyphosate, for which the Committee decided that glufosinate Ammonium would be an ideal solution.

Dr. J.A. Sumith also shared the following decisions taken by the Committee for necessary action.

1. Revival of Lifeline@ (containing 28%o wlv glufosinate ammonium) under the Indenting Registration Number M890000 (M/s DTW International (Pvt.) Ltd.) and the Supplementary Registration Number M890100 (M/s CIC CropGuard (Pvt.) Ltd.), falling under the WHO Hazard Class III, with immediate effect.

2. Discontinuation of Basta@ (containing I5% w/v glufosinate ammonium) under the Indenting Registration Number 8770000 (M/s Bayer CropScience) and the Supplementary Registration Number 8770100 (M/s Hayleys Agriculture Holdings (Pvt.) Ltd.), due to WHO Hazard Class II, with immediate effect.

All applications submitted for registration of glufosinate ammonium will be taken for re-evaluation in an orderly manner.

All new proposals from potential sources/parties in compliance with the above conditions will be entertained as per the relevant formats (RP/2-c), submitted along with the detailed composition (all adjutants must be clearly declared by chemical/common name & CAS Number) & Material Safety Data Sheet. Upon preliminary evaluations including bio-efficacy, new applications will be entertained with necessary technical dossiers for evaluation.
