Since July 1, 2014, the registration and production permit for paraquat AS was revoked, with only the technical concentrate producers being allowed to produce it for overseas registration and export purposes. From July 1, 2016, the sale and use of paraquat AS in China was terminated.

In 2013, Nanjing Red Sun was granted registration of its 20% paraquat soluble gel valid for a period of five years, which will expire on September 25, 2018. If no renewal of the registration is granted, the production of paraquat soluble gel will have to be terminated on September 25, 2018. However, the product is still marketable and usable within its two-year validity period, which will last until September 25, 2020.

History of regulations of paraquat

On July 10, 2015, the toxicity of paraquat was revised and classified as highly toxic; in May 2016, being classified as highly toxic, the examination and approval of a paraquat-oriented field trial and the registration application or renewal application were terminated, with the exception of paraquat produced by technical concentrate producers for overseas registration and export.

Before September 25, 2020, no other producers got the chance to launch new paraquat formulations, which means the paraquat soluble gel produced by Red Sun will remain as the sole paraquat product in the market.
