On April 13, Syngenta Flowers announced it reached an agreement with Verwer Dahlia BV to acquire its dahlia assortment and breeding program. Both companies expect to finalize the acquisition in the coming weeks. Terms were not disclosed.
Verwer Dahlia BV, one of the leading dahlia innovators in the Netherlands, was established in 1967 in Lisse in the heart of the bulb-growing region in the Netherlands.
The Royal Horticultural Society recently awarded Aad and Cees Verwer the p Reginald Cory Memorial Cup for their successful hybridization program that resulted in the recent introduction and availability of new hybrids of merit.
Their dahlia assortment has more than 140 registered varieties, including well-known series like Gallery, Melody and the recently introduced Dahlegria dahlias.
Michael Kester, global Head Flowers at Syngenta, said: “We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Verwer Dahlia to acquire their innovative dahlia assortment. It will strengthen our dahlia portfolio, and will help us to do more to meet the needs of our customers.”
Cees Verwer, CEO of Verwer Dahlia added, “We are proud to work with Syngenta, a strong global player with a long history in the pot and bedding plants market. They have the expertise and market position to expand the success of our dahlia assortment and continue the breeding program for future success.”
Verwer Dahlia’s activities in the dahlia tuber market are not part of the planned acquisition and will continue as before.
