AgroPages-Koppert introduces new trap to combat Drosophila suzukii-Agricultural news

Koppert Biological Systems has developed a new trap named ‘Drososan’ to help growers of soft fruits to capture, monitor, and control the fruit fly Drosophila suzukii. Set to be launched on the market this month, the product is more effective than standard traps.

Up until now, growers have been using a combination of Fruit Fly Attractant bait and the generic Moskisan trap to capture Drosophila suzukii.

In contrast to the Moskisan trap, Drososan has been specifically designed to combat Drosophila suzukii. For instance, the trap is now coloured red – a colour known to be particularly attractive to the harmful fruit fly.

Better insight into level of infestation

The openings in the gauze have also been specially adapted to the fruit fly's size. ‘This eliminates the risk of capturing other insects,’ says product manager Rick van der Pas. ‘As the trap doesn't capture pollinators, growers can more easily count the number of specimens caught and gain a better insight into the level of infestation.’

More effective than other traps

Just like the Moskisan trap, Drososan is used in combination with the Fruit Fly Attractant bait, as this delivers the best results. Independent research (Agroforestry Mediterranean Institute of the Polytechnic University of Valencia) has shown Drososan to be more effective than a standard trap or the generic Moskisan trap.
