In a move denounced as "protectionism," the US has announced it will impose preliminary duties of as much as 109% on imported Chinese potassium phosphate salts, reports China Daily. The US Department of Commerce said in a statement that it had preliminarily determined that subsidies equal to the proposed duties were received by Chinese producers and exporters. However, the Commerce Department will not make a final determination until May.

US imports of Chinese potassium phosphate salts were valued at about US$16.4 million from 2006 to 2008, according to data from the US government. US imports of potassium salts from China increased by 228% during this time.
