The product NEMguard DE®, based on garlic extract (Allium sativum) has now been approved for use on carrots in the Netherlands. It will give growers the opportunity to reduce crop damage by nematodes whilst also responding to the demands of their customers to use low-risk products for plant protection.

The polysulfides contained within the garlic extract in this patented formulation have a detrimental effect on free living nematodes and root knot nematodes. A significant advantage of the product is that it has no harvest interval and no Maximum Residue Level (MRL). Label extension with a large number of minor crops is expected later this year.

Certis Europe applied for registration and was granted approval for use of NEMguard DE under the so-called ‘Green Deal’ promoted by the Dutch government. The ‘Green Deal’ was established in 2014 to promote the development of a green economy and, in terms of plant protection, to alleviate society’s concerns about the effects of plant protection products on people, the environment and biodiversity. The aim of the project was to explore the feasibility of creating a framework to simplify assessment procedures, allowing for faster approvals for biorational products with a low risk for humans and the environment and to give a boost to sustainable crop protection.

NEMguard DE was one of the products chosen for assessment under this project and, after stringent evaluation by the Dutch Board for the Authorisation of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (CTGB) was approved in February 2017.
