Brazilian crop production will increase by almost 29 percent this year: Conab

BrazilBrazil’s grain production is set to reach 215 million tons, a 15 percent increase over last season’s figure, data released by the National Supply Company (Conab) showed.
Unlike Argentina, marred by uncertainty about the end of the due cycle, the Brazilian statistics are cause for optimism in the face of the climatic damage.
As per Conab’s data, the grain harvest in Brazil increased by 28.6 million tons in 2017, reaching 215.3 million tons, accounting for 15.3 percent excess production than last year.
The study undertaken by the state entity attributed the increased production to improved average productivity, as well as to more optimum climatic conditions. In addition, the area under harvest had also increased by 1.3 percent to 59.1 million hectares.
Soybeans and corn will account for 87.4 percent of total production. The soybeans production is expected to reach 103.8 million tons.
The center-west region is the largest producer in the country, with the state of Mato Grosso leading the way.
Corn production is expected to reach 84.5 million tons, accounting for 39.2 percent of the total. The figure represents an increase of 26.9 percent over the previous harvest. This time, 3.2 percent additional area was under corn, compared to last season.
Rice is another cereal expected to witness an increase in production. Total production is likely to be 11.6 million tons, 9.2 percent more than the previous season’s figure even though 3.2 percent less area was under rice this time.
As for cotton, production will reach 3.5 million tons, 10 percent more than last season, even though the area under the crop had decreased by 5.2 percent, according to Conab.
