The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), Brazil’s major regulatory agency, has approved the use of the active ingredient, Flupyradifurone, for the production of insecticides by Bayer.
Launched two years ago in the United States and China (among other markets) under the commercial brand Sivanto, the product was released in Brazil for the crops of coffee, citrus fruits, cabbage and tobacco.

In order to be commercialized, Flupyradifurone still needs authorization from two other agencies for registration in Brazil: the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) and the Brazilian Institute of Natural Environment and Renewable Resources (Ibama).

It is a systemic insecticide, belonging to a new chemical class (named butenolide). According to Bayer, the Sivanto Prime breakthrough was inspired by the natural composition, stemofoline (isolated by the plant Stemona japonica), a chemical group that represents a new bioactivity, acting selectively at the RACn.

The manufacturer claimed that due to its “physical-chemical properties, added to the versatility of the application mode of foliar, along with the irrigation in the soil and seed treatment, offers an excellent and fast way to control a big number of sucking insects. This helps control the white-fly and aphids in case of the most diverse crops.”

Due to its toxicological profile, the product is safe for bees and other pollinators as well as some species of beneficial insects. Sivanto is marked by Bayer for the Integrated Management Programs, a sustainable tool to manage sucking insects. This molecule is also active for the resistant populations, such as white-fly, and it is not metabolized by the enzyme P450, which brings metabolic resistance for Neonicotinoids and pymetrozine.
