Syngenta has presented the distribution network in Spain and launched its new herbicide Serrate (clodinafop-propargyl + pyroxsulam), which was recently allowed by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Magrama). The product will be available for the next cereal season. According to the company, the product is indicated for the control of compact brome (Bromus madritensis), a weed that has become a true problem in Spain and affects almost 300,000 hectares of cereals.

The rapid spread of compact brome has been due to diverse causes such as the lack of crop rotation, proliferation of low labor techniques and the absence of herbicides that act effectively against this weed. Therefore, in order to control the brome, crop rotation, good agricultural practices and the use of effective herbicides like Serrate are necessary.

Serrate has been registered for the crops of wheat, rye and triticale, combining two active ingredients with two different modes of action and enabling effectiveness at the appearance of resistance. Serrate absorbs rapidly and acts in a bipolar form for all the plants, thus acting more effectively. Syngenta points out that the key to achieve maximum effectiveness is to choose the correct application time, acting early, with two to three leaves on the plant. This way, the brome control is “excellent.”

Besides, tests have proven that the application of two doses of Serrate not only controlled the compact brome but also other weeds such as oats, the cloud grass (Agrotis nebulosa) and Veronica. Another important point is that the effectiveness included lower temperatures and did not condition posterior crops.

Serrate boosts the market as a wide-spectrum herbicide that controls all brome species, including grass and some dicotyledons, is safer when selective on wheat, rye and triticale, and is compatible with rotations.
