Syngenta announced the introduction of a new herbicide Acuron Uno in Uruguay. The herbicide, developed from a new active principle, is efficient for the control of grasses and weeds in corn during fallowing or at the pre-emerging stage of the crop. Besides, the new product controls weeds such as sourgrass, the banyard grass, the Argentine fleabane, Amaranth and Chloris, Eleusine, among others.

Acutron Uno is formulated based on bicyclopyrone, belonging to the chemical family of triquetones. It exerts its action to inhibit the enzyme HPPD and interferes with the synthesis of carotenoids. The inhibition of such compositions results in the destruction of chlorophyll, resulting in albinism of the treated weeds, which is the first symptom before death.

According to Jose Inciarte, head of Market at Syngenta Uruguay, Acuron Uno represents an innovative standard for the control of weeds in corn. “The new molecule is more beneficial when compared to the best alternatives available in the market. It demonstrates a wide-spectrum control and superior effectiveness on the control of grasses on fleabane and Amaranth,” he said.

Raul Moreno, Herbicide Research Manager at Syngenta for South Latin America, presented the characteristics of this new product. “It is a new molecule with a new power control, wide spectrum and a greater residuality that is available in the market today. Its different mode of action helps in preventing resistance in weeds, thus making it a complete product,” he added.

"The use of pre-emergent herbicides is justified by their negative effects on weeds over the yields, especially in early stages in corn,” Moreno affirmed. The competition over yield loss can start early before the V2 (two expanded leaves) extends to V8 (eight expanded leaves). Therefore, the use of pre-emergent herbicides with high residual power like Acuron Uno comes from the yield loss through early competition,” he asserted.

On the other hand, Nicolás Faggi, Head of Research and Development at Syngenta Uruguay, presented results of tests made in the last three years with this product. “Acuron Uno always presented the best quality and greater residuality among tens of tests carried out in different localities, years, climatic conditions and soils. This demonstrates that the product is always consistent and shows good performance under different situations,” he pointed out. In this sense, he qualified it as “an excellent alternative to atrazine with a superior control of grasses. It is a product that does not require any recipe for its use,” he added.
