The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has proposed to approve Bayer CropScience’s fungicide Infinito SC (62.5 g/L fluopicolide + 625 g/L propamocarb hydrochloride). APVMA also decided to approve fluopicolide as a new active ingredient. The proposed use for Infinito SC is for the control of downy mildew in bulb vegetables, cucurbits, lettuce, and poppies and late blight in potatoes.

Fluopicolide belongs to a new chemical class (Group 43). Fluopicolide causes rapid destabilization of fungal cell structures. It is a systemic and protectant fungicide applied as a foliar or a drench treatment that is used to control some important diseases on plants.

The APVMA has considered the toxicological aspects of fluopicolide, and concluded that there are no toxicological concerns regarding the approval of this active constituent. The ADI for fluopicolide was established at 0.08 mg/kg bw/day. This value is consistent with those established by the Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) and of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The ARfD for fluopicolide was established at 0.6 mg/kg bw/day. This ARfD is consistent with that of the JMPR.

Public comments for this approve will be closed on December 13, 2016.
