By Think Real - In the first half of 2016, the wheat heading and flowering period in Jiangsu Province encountered rainy days, which directly lead to the serious occurrence of head blight. The disease was more serious over 2015, causing the fall in the quality of wheat and affecting the purchase of summer grain to some extent. According to researcher Chen Huaigu from the Plant Protection Institute, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, wheat head blight has been striking Jiangsu Province for five consecutive years and with higher frequency. It has become an affecting factor for the wheat production in Jiangsu Province.

According to historic files, since 2010, wheat head blight has been striking Jiangsu except for the slight occurrence in 2011 and it was quite serious in 2010 and 2012. 2016 is still a year for the disease and it has a wider occurrence area, worth of attention.

As introduced by Chen, most of wheat varieties in Jiangsu are easily infected by head blight, which is the very reason for the frequent breakout of the disease in recent years. Therefore, the choice of varieties with good resistance against the disease will lessen the pressure from the chemical prevention and control of it. Judging by the actual application, there are five main varieties of this kind, namely Ningmai 13, Yangmai 21, Zhenmai No. 10, Huamai No. 7and Yangfumai No. 4.

In the recent two years, Jiangsu has been demanding more of the resistance against head blight in the approval of wheat varieties. For example, those for the planting in Huainan Region should have medium or high resistance against the disease and for those with high resistance, requirements for their output can be loosened accordingly.

Prevention and control by pesticides is still the key measure for wheat head blight in production. Chen said that the resistance against carbendazim from head blight has been paid more attention and farmers are more careful and reasonable in the choice of pesticide varieties, and highly-effective pesticides like JS399-19 and tebuconazole are promoted and used on a large area. However, to achieve ideal prevention and control effect, more should be done in the timing of pesticides, which can be seen from the effective control of the disease with pesticide application in the proper time.
