Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) called for submissions on an Application made by Syngenta Australia Pty Ltd seeking permission for food derived from corn line MZHG0JG, which is genetically modified to provide tolerance to the herbicides glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium.

Tolerance to glyphosate is achieved through expression of the enzyme 5-enolpyruvyl-3- shikimatephosphate synthase (EPSPS) encoded by a modified epsps gene (mepsps) derived from corn (Zea mays). Tolerance to glufosinate is achieved through expression of the enzyme phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT) encoded by the pat gene derived from the common soil bacterium Streptomyces viridochromogenes. The safety of both proteins has previously been assessed by FSANZ.

FSANZ concluded that no potential public health and safety concerns have been identified in the assessment of MZHG0JG. On the basis of the data provided in the present Application, and other available information, food derived from MZHG0JH is considered to be as safe for human consumption as food derived from conventional corn varieties.
