Over 700 biological targets now can be controlled with agrochemicals specifically registered for "Crops with Insufficient Phytosanitary Support" - popularly known as minor crops in Brazil. One year after the publication of the Normative Instruction No. 01/2014, over 350 crops were already included in the labeling of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, acaricides, and bactericides.
This Normative Instruction was published to meet the demand of active ingredients registration r for the use on minor crops. In order to do that, a work group of the Brazilian government called "Technical Committee of Agrochemicals Assistance", which gathers three agencies were involved in the registration.
The risk evaluation of these substances for human health is attributed to the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). The Brazilian Institute of Natural Environment and Renewable Resources (IBAMA) evaluates the potential effects for the natural environment. These two agencies send the results of the evaluations to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply.
According to the agricultural enforcement agent Álvaro Inácio, the registration "allows that the producer protect the production with efficiency and safety for the environment, the applicator and the final consumer. The project is based on international experiences and its success is also related to the engagement of registering companies".
Since the publication of the Instruction, over 500 Maximum Limit of Residues for several crops such as watercress, arugula, eggplant, mustard, cassava, cocoa, parsley and etc have also been defined.
