Agriculture is an important sector of the economy in Kyrgyzstan. According to the CIA World Factbook, it comprises 20.2% of the total GDP and occupies 48% of the total labor force.

Under the data of the National Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan in 2014 the total sown area occupied by crops, has amounted to 1.188 million hectares.

In the structure of grain crops areas (without legumes, rice and buckwheat) were occupied 588.3 thousand ha (49.5% of the total arable land), respectively legumes – 61.1 thousand ha (5.1%), oilseeds – 43.8 thousand ha (3.7%), cotton – 23.3 thousand ha (2%), tobacco - 2 thousand ha (0.2%), sugar beet (factory) -7.3 thousand ha (0.6%), potatoes – 78.9 thousand ha (6.6%), vegetables – 44.9 thousand ha (3.8%), other crops (rice, melons, etc.) – 24.8 thousand ha (2.1%) and fodder crops – 313.7 thousand hectares (26.4%).

In 2014, a half of total sown areas accounted for cereals (no legumes, rice and buckwheat).  Compare with 2013, wheat was sown less by 7.1 thousand ha (2%), and on the contrary, the barley was sown more than 8.4 thousand ha (5.7%). The crops of maize for grain have remained at the level of 2013.

Increase of crop’s sowing areas, legumes, rice, vegetables, sugar beet have been conducted by decrease of sowing areas of oilseeds, cotton, tobacco and potatoes accordingly.

USAID works in partnership with the Government of Kyrgyzstan to implement programs under the Economic Development Fund aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector. Coordinated program activities include: a distribution of locally procured seeds to small- and medium-sized farms throughout the country; the provision of agricultural production machinery among target seed farms; and support to livestock breeding farms through the procurement of live animals, livestock equipment, and the provision of targeted technical assistance.

The Kyrgyz Agro-Input Enterprise Development (KAED) project, financed by USAID for 24 million dollars and implemented by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), has been operating in Kyrgyzstan.

The project encouraged Kyrgyz farmers to adopt practices that will increase crop production and rural incomes. KAED focused its efforts on entrepreneurs, farmers and commodities that offer the best potential for improving sustainable agricultural production and opportunities for generating employment. The project was implemented using local and international experts and staff.

The KAED project helped to increase the yields of wheat and other vital food crops and the quantity and quality of animal feed for the production of milk, eggs and meat. The project alliances with the Eurasia Group, Oasis, TES Center and others have enabled farmers to raise more and better quality soybeans, sunflower and corn as sources of protein feed. This, in turn, helped develop feed and edible oil value chains and transform the poultry sector so that egg producers could now compete with imported eggs from China and Russia where feed is subsidized – and launch the country on a trajectory toward self-sufficiency.

Wheat yield increases for the 20,000 targeted farmers (on 40,000 hectares) increased each year by an average of over 400 kilograms (kg) a year for a total increase of 1.3 mt over the base of 3.8 mt yield, which is resulted in a total additional production from project efforts of 52.000 mt.

In the framework of land rehabilitation activities, the project brought back into production 5,500 ha of land across the Kyrgyz Republic.
