There will be not least than 150 exotic and quarantined pests to invade Brazil in the coming years, of which, at least ten have real chances to threat Brazilian crops. The alert was made by Luis Eduardo Rangel, secretary of the Thematic Chamber of Inputs of Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply at a recent meeting.

According to Rangel, the diseases that have significant risk for Brazilian agriculture are the following: Aphis Glycines on soybeans, Lethal Necrosis on corn, Frosty pod rot on cacao tree (Moniliophthora roreri), Coconut Lethal Yellowing ( Haplaxius crudus), Brevipalpus chilensis (A mite affecting grapes, kiwi and citrus), rice Kresek disease (Xanthomonas Oryzae) or bacterial leaf blight, and the Q biotype whitefly (Bemisia Tabaci).

Rangel points out that it is possible to measure the risks and manage the invasion through the phytosanitary supervision of Brazil. In order to do it, it is need to classify the risks and define the contingency and control plans. "Making phytosanitary policy is not making phytosanitary politics," says the expert.
