Indian seed company Advanta India (Hyderabad), through its subsidiary Pacific Seeds Australia, has purchased a controlling stake in Australian seed company LongReach Plant Breeders for Aus$12 million (US$10.5 million). LongReach is a wheat seed breeding company. The remaining shareholding lies with Syngenta Seeds. The acquisition is subject to the achievement of established breeding targets to 2011. Advanta, which has operations in Australia, Argentina, India and Thailand, was acquired by United Phosphorus in February 2006. Its primary focus has been conventional hybrid seed, but it has been able to access genetically modified traits through licensing arrangements. A licence for Chinese GM technology has enabled it to introduce Bt cotton into India.
