Karma, the new fungicide from Certis Europe for controlling apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) has been granted organic status.

Alan Horgan, speciality crops Technical Officer for Certis, explains that Karma is a new contact fungicide with preventative, and useful curative control. “The organic approval of this product is great news for growers, and makes sense as the active is approved as a food grade additive and therefore has no MRL requirements.

Containing potassium hydrogen carbonate, Karma incorporates ‘wetters and stickers’ for maximum efficacy, coverage and rainfastness. It has a multi-site mode of action, which inhibits the chance of any resistance problems developing. It inhibits mycelia growth and causes the total collapse of spores through a combination of dehydration, pH and specific bicarbonate/carbonate ion effects.

Alan concludes that to maximise Karma’s efficacy, growers should ensure they use the product during periods of leaf wetness, whilst also avoiding the flowering stage up to 10mm fruit stage, or during the last five weeks before anticipated harvest. “Karma should be applied in at least 400 litres of water per hectare to achieve a thorough coverage of the crop,” he advises.
