Ceres has initiated to evaluate the performance of transgenic sugarcane varieties in the fields tests. These sugarcane varieties are characteristics of high content of sugar and drought tolerance. The first growth cycle will finish in the second half of 2015, when the preliminary performance observations will be available. The evaluations will be managed by a South American sugarcane developer.

Dr. Roger Pennell, Ceres vice-president of treatment development. said "The improvement of plants is particularly painful in the case of sugarcane. The plant has long periods of growth and the common improvement procedures are difficult to be implemented due to limitations of how and when sugarcane produce pollen and flowers".

If it is proven that the genetically modified sugarcane varieties show better characteristics, the new varieties can benefits sugarcane production significantly. The higher sugar yields and the bigger tolerance to drought and other stress conditions will not only increase production, but also diminish production costs.
