BASF is increasing its investments in biotechnology in Brazil, and has already developed a soybean cultivar tolerant to herbicides for the 2015/2016 crop season in partnership with the Brazilian Company of Agricultural Research (Embrapa).

The cultivar is branded "Cultivance" and is approved for commercial planting in Brazil for five years. However, the arrival of the genetically modified seed in the fields was delayed due to the approval of importers. “We prefer to wait for the buyer's approval. China already released, while Europe might approve it this year”, said Peter Eckes, president of BASF Plant Science.

The division supervised by Eckes invests approximately €150 million annualy on biotechnology research. Meanwhile, BASF Plant Science opts to establish associations with partners to commercialize seeds directly in the market.

One of the most vigorous partnership is with Monsanto. Last year, both companies launched the first "trait" event in the US market which brings corn tolerance to drought. The technology allows productivity gains of nearly 314 kilos per hectares, according to the company. For now, there is no release for launching the variety in Brazil. "We're evaluation how to move forward", said Eckes.

BASF also dedicats to develop cultivars resistant to herbicides, stimulated by the problem of a wider resistance to glyphosate in major producing countries such as Brazil and United States.
