DuPont announced the opening of the second phase of its China Research and Development Center. With this expansion, the DuPont China R&D Center adds 17,500 square meters and will house an additional 150 researchers, focusing on new material applications in solar energy, bio-based materials and automotive materials and testing capabilities.

“Science is the engine that drives DuPont. Together with our partners, we are applying our vast range of scientific expertise and knowledge to address some of the world’s most complex challenges in the areas of food, energy and protection,” said DuPont Chair and Chief Executive Officer Ellen Kullman at the opening ceremony.

“What distinguishes DuPont from other science companies is the depth and breadth of our expertise and how we connect our talent to help solve the challenges of the 21st century. Our integrated science today combines biological sciences with chemistry, materials science and engineering to drive new growth opportunities for the corporation and our customers,” Kullman added.

The DuPont China R&D Center plays an important role in the company’s global business strategy, delivering innovative offerings to meet local market needs since its opening in 2005. As one of the company’s major R&D facilities outside the United States, the DuPont China R&D Center currently provides technical expertise to customers in this region and globally for research, application development, training, technology transfer, and sales of DuPont technologies and products. This center also enables technological exchanges and research collaborations between DuPont and its partners including leading Chinese and Asian universities and research institutions.

DuPont Greater China President Tony Su said, “We see greater potential for innovation in China since the government has been aggressively implementing the strategy of innovation-driven development at a faster pace. As a science company, DuPont believes innovation is an inclusive process. With this expansion, we will be able to foster more collaboration with local governments, companies, academics and organizations in China to find science-based solutions for a sustainable future.”

As a world-leading science company, DuPont invested more than $2.1 billion in research and development in 2012 and has 150 R&D facilities around the world. The DuPont China R&D Center is located in the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park of Shanghai, one of China’s national level technical parks dedicated to high-tech start-ups and research organizations.
